In this blog we will look at what you can do to make your home as safe as possible for your new puppy. Of course you want your puppy to come home as safely and pleasantly as possible and you also want your house to remain as safe as possible. That’s why it’s a good idea to start puppyproofing your home well in advance.
Puppyproofing your home
Below you will find some tips to help you with this:
- Make sure no cables and electrical wires are accessible to your pup. Put lamps on high spots, and make sure that wires from other household appliances are not accessible to your pup.
- Keep poisonous plants out of your pup’s reach. Plants like Aloe Vera, House Palm, Hole Plant and Ivy are poisonous if your dog eats them, so make sure he doesn’t even get that chance.
- Make sure slippery floors are covered with rugs or temporarily place a piece of cheap carpeting over them so your pup can’t slip.
- Make sure the puppy cannot climb on furniture. The climbing itself isn’t the worst, but puppies aren’t exactly ‘dexterous’, so the risk of a fall is high.
- Store medicines properly, in a place where the puppy cannot reach.
- Create a nice and safe place for your puppy, where he can retreat when he is tired. For example, in a crate or puppy pen, with some toys and a nice pillow.
- Place stair gates or baby gates in places where he is not allowed to go. That saves you constantly managing where your pup is and isn’t allowed to go.
- Put fragile things in a safe place. It would be a shame if your pup knocks over that precious vase by playing too wildly!
