We all know those days when it’s raining outside and our four-legged friends (and we ourselves, haha!) aren’t too excited to go outside. So today a blog about creative ways to entertain your dog during rainy days. With a little imagination and some indoor fun, you can keep your dog entertained and busy even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Read on!
Six tips for rainy days with your dog
- Create an indoor play area:
Create a special play area in your home where your dog can move freely. Move furniture aside to make room for playing games like fetch or hide and seek. Make sure the area is clear of fragile objects and that there is enough room for your dog to run around. Also pay attention to the surface: make sure the floor is not too slippery, so that your dog cannot slip. If necessary, place a few rugs on the floor with an anti-slip layer on the bottom.
- Enriching feeding games:
Use feeding toys such as puzzles to challenge your dog mentally and physically. Hide treats in the toys and encourage your dog to find them by sniffing and pushing open. This keeps him busy and stimulates his natural hunting instinct.
- Learn new tricks:
Rainy days are perfect for teaching your dog new tricks. Teach him funny tricks like “give paw”, “roll over” or “high five”. Use positive reinforcement to make the learning process fun and motivating for your dog.
- Do scent detection exercises:
Hide different scents around the house, such as spices or food, and let your dog find them with his nose. This game stimulates your dog’s sense of smell and keeps him entertained as he follows his hunting instinct. If you are already further along with scent detection, you can also do a formal training at home of course!
- Cuddle time and massage:
Nothing is more relaxing and comforting for your dog than some quality time with you. Take the time to cuddle, pet and give your dog a soothing massage. This strengthens the bond between both of you and provides comfort during a rainy day. However, pay attention to your dog’s body language! Some dogs don’t like to be touched at all, or only under certain conditions. Seeing and respecting your dog’s boundaries will keep things fun for both of you.
- Doing nothing:
It’s totally fine to just do nothing for a day! Find some nice (dog) movies on your favorite streaming service, and watch a movie together! A quick trip to the supermarket and pet shop for some snacks, and you’ll be set for the rest of the day 😉
