I wrote a blog about paddleboarding with your dog before. Because I really enjoy doing it myself, I decided to dedicate another blog to it, this time with ten short tips to build up paddleboarding with your dog in a fun way.
Ten tips for paddleboarding with your dog
- Start training on shore: Before going out on the water, it is important to train and familiarize your dog with the SUP board. Get your dog used to the board, let him stand on it, and reward him with positive reinforcement.
- Choose the right paddle board: Make sure you choose a stable paddle board that is suitable for the weight of you and your dog. A wider board offers more stability, which is useful if you want to take your dog with you. My two boards are from Aqua Marina (pictured) and from Stardupp. Both are for sale at Wakestore, among others.
- Use a well-fitting life jacket: For the safety of your dog, it is important to use a well-fitting life jacket. This gives extra buoyancy and ensures that your dog remains safe even if they fall into the water. My life jackets are of the Hunter brand, I am very satisfied with them.
- Practice in shallow water: Start in shallow water where your dog can stand so he can get used to the feel of the water and the SUP board. Feed your dog for every positive interaction with the board.
- Step by step: Build up the sup sessions slowly. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration as your dog becomes more familiar with paddleboarding.
- Teach your dog cues: Teach your dog basic cues such as “sit,” “stay,” and “down” before you hit the water. These cues come in handy while paddling and help keep your dog safe.
- Take the weather conditions into account: Choose calm waters and avoid strong currents and strong winds. Also keep in mind the temperature of the water and make sure your dog doesn’t overheat.
- Protect the paws: Check the surface where you enter the water to make sure there are no sharp objects that could injure your dog’s paws. If necessary, consider using paw guards for extra protection.
- Bring water and snacks: Make sure you bring enough water and snacks for both you and your dog. Hydration is essential, especially during physical activity.
- Enjoy! Paddleboarding with your dog is a great way to spend quality time. Don’t forget to relax, have fun and appreciate the experience together.
I hope these tips help you to make your dog SUP safe and fun. I wish you lots of fun and cool, adventurous moments!
