Last week I took the stick with ‘Grevelingendam’ out of my jar for the DogBlog Stick Challenge 2023, so we went for a nice walk on the Grevelingendam this week. Today my blog with our experience and my review of this area!
The Grevelingendam is an elongated area on the actual Grevelingendam, between Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. You can park in one of the parking lots, there are a lot of them and especially in winter it is never busy, so parking is never a problem.
There are two areas where dogs are allowed to go off leash, and that’s where I actually run into my biggest flaw of the terrain. The off-leash areas are at both ends of the Grevelingendam, where the terrain becomes very narrow and you walk very close to the road. That in itself is not a problem if your dog stays close to you, but not all dogs do that well, of course. So be aware of this when you go for a walk here!
The in between area is accessible to dogs, especially in the winter months from October 1 to April 1, but your dog must be leashed here. We met quite a few other people during our walk, and no one had their dog on a leash, but be aware that you have to do this and that you risk a fine if you don’t.
In the summer months, the area where you’re allowed to go with your dog is a bit smaller, but even then you can go for a nice walk and certainly on a leash it is a beautiful area to walk. Many narrow passages that then lead to a beautiful open area, which gives a lot of variation. And in the summer you can also enjoy water sports here with your dog! I went SUPing with my dogs a few times last summer, it’s so much fun to do!
You can also enjoy dog sports that take place on a leash, such as tracking.
We walked the terrain back and forth a number of times last week, and had a great time! We only had Juno, Freyja and Herja with us, and they also had a great time. Run, play, swim, love it!
Great as a walking area, less so as an off-leash area
Walking and exercising with your dog is great here, but keep in mind that your dog must be kept on a leash in most areas
