In this blog we discuss what you can do to make the first days that your new puppy is at home go as smoothly as possible. For your pup, but certainly also for yourself!
Some tips to make your new puppy feel at home quickly:
- Give your puppy time and space to explore his or her new living environment, but of course keep an eye on him
- Provide a nice comfortable place to sleep, and make sure that your puppy also gets enough rest. Adult dogs need about 14-16 hours of sleep per day, and puppies much more than that. So make sure that your puppy also gets that rest
- Puppy proof your house in advance
- Make sure you have enough food and snacks at home
- Make sure you have found an toilet place close to home in advance. This way you can start potty training right away
- Be patient with your pup, don’t get angry if an accident happens in the house
- Your pup has been used to sleeping with others all his or her life. So don’t be surprised if your pup can’t be alone at night yet. In that case you can place a crate next to your bed (I do this myself anyway). This way you are awake quickly and you can take action quickly if your puppy has to pee during the night. You can then place the crate a little further away from your bed until it is downstairs again. This way your puppy will gradually get used to sleeping alone
- Some pups have some difficulty with the transition from nest to new home, and eat less well the first few days. In that case, offer the meals in slightly smaller portions, and spread them out a little more often throughout the day
- And most importantly: enjoy! Take photos and videos, enjoy this first time together!
