For Juno’s birthday, last April, I made a Doggy Birthday Cake with Red Fruits and a delicious cream cheese frosting with honey. She loved it!
Several people asked me if I wanted to share the recipe, of course I do, so that’s why I wrote today’s blog.
Doggy Birthday Cake met Rode Vruchten
Ingredients:
- 250g buckwheat flour
- 3 eggs
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- a handful of red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, etc)
- water
Instructions:
- Pre-heat the oven at 180C/350F
- Grease a cake pan (I used a 20cm diameter pan)
- Mix flour, eggs and honey together with a mixer. Add water until you get a smooth cake dough. Add the fruits and fold them in gently.
- Put the dough into the mold and even it out
- Bake for about half an hour, or until the cake is nicely browned and a skewer comes out clean
- Let it cool before you decorate it
When your cake has cooled completely, you can start decorating it. You can of course opt for a decoration of, for example, kibble or something similar, but a cream cheese frosting with a cool Happy Birthday cookie is of course much more fun to look at! I printed my cookie cutter for the cookie myself, but there are several options for buying such cookie cutters available online, for example through Etsy.
Happy Birthday Cookie
Ingredients:
- 250g buckwheat flour
- 125g peanut butter (I use a dog safe peanut butter)
- 2 eggs
- water
Instructions:
- Pre-heat the oven at 180C/350F
- Knead the whole into a dough (add water until you get a well kneadable dough)
- Roll it out thinly
- Cut out the cookies with a cookie cutter and place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper
- Bake the cookies crispy in about 15 minutes
Cream Cheese Frosting
Ingredients:
- Packet of Philadelphia cream cheese (or similar, Philadelphia is a brand that’s sold in the Netherlands)
- optional: an extra flavor (for example honey)
- optional: food coloring (preferably use dog safe natural dyes, I prefer natural color powders like Spirulina powder for blue)
Instructions:
- Stir the extra flavor and coloring through the cream cheese, and scoop the whole into a piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle
- Spin beautiful swirls on your cooled cake
- Serve right away
Juno loved her cake!
